Prisoners of Freedom

Last week at his meeting with George Bush, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas steering clear of the words "terrorism" and "terrorists", demanded the release of those he called "prisoners of freedom," now being held in Israeli jails. (Read more at Brett Stephen's editorial.)

Today, in the coastal town of Hadera a suicide bomber exploded in the open market, killing 5 people and wounding some 30 others.

The suicide bomber, Hassan Abu Zeid, was one of Abbas' "prisoners of freedom" who was released about one month ago from Israeli prison.

Islamic Jihad have claimed responsibility.

It is a natural retaliation for the Israeli crimes committed against our people, namely the crime against Luay Sa'adi," Islamic Jihad spokesman Khader Habib told the AP. "The Islamic Jihad movement was committed to the truce, and is still committed to the truce, but this truce should be mutual. We cannot tolerate a one-sided truce.

Media Backspin notes the army's doubt over the veracity of these retaliation claims.

Military sources, however, were quick to point out that a bomb attack of this magnitude took longer than three days to plan.

A Matter of Principle

A very shortsighted law:

The Israeli terror law only recognizes victims of hostile acts perpetrated by "enemy forces" as terror victims. In the recent Shfaram attack the murderer was a Jewish soldier, and therefore is not considered a member of enemy forces. The victims, by the compensation law, are not regarded as victims of terror.

The act was an act of terror, but in the context of the compensation law the victims cannot be considered victims of terror. The application of the law concerns the perpetrator of the terrorist act not the victims.

Head Heeb explains in his comments

I wouldn't call it stupidity so much as lack of forethought. When the law was written, the possibility of Jewish political terrorism against Israeli Arabs wasn't really on the radar screen, so terrorism was defined as an act committed by an enemy of the state. Now that terrorism from within the state in opposition to state policy has entered the political landscape, it's necessary to change the definition.

The law doesn't say that "Arab victims of terror aren't victims of terror." Arab citizens of Israel who are killed or injured by Palestinian terrorists are considered terror victims and entitled to payment under the law. The law does need to be changed, but it doesn't segregate victims based on race - it segregates them based on the motivation of the perpetrator.

The Shfaram terror victims will receive a one-time compensation payment based on the allowance they would have received had they been recognized as terror victims. The compensation is therefore not really a problem - the problem is the principle. The message conveyed to the public is inappropriate.

I have received a couple of mails from some angry readers who misinterpreted this post. I'll repeat what I said earlier. The law lacked forethought and must be changed. It is unacceptable.

Attempted Islamic Jihad Attack Foiled

Shin Bet foils pullout bomb plot

Security forces have uncovered a plot masterminded by the Islamic Jihad to attack evacuating forces or Gaza settlers during disengagement, details released for publication on Wednesday revealed.

A 10-kg explosive-belt was found hidden in a solar water heater at the Muwassi Palestinian enclave in Gush Katif Wednesday morning.

According to officials, two of the cell members were supposed to be suicide bombers who were expected to wear IDF uniforms.

Jewish Terrorist Kills 4

Words fail me. A Jewish terrorist massacred innocent Israeli Arab civillians on a bus yesterday. The terrorist was an activist in the outlawed extremist Kach movement and went AWOL a month ago to protest the disengagement movement.

I have been arguing with people opposed to the disengagement for some time now that the incitement from some of the extreme anti-disengagement groups has reached worrying proportions. It becomes a slippery slope and ends in tragedy.

The future really scares me...

Yekutiel Ben-Ya'acov, the founder of the Jewish Legion, a far-right defense group based in Tapuah, said: "We will be stepping up our efforts to do everything in our power to stop the disengagement, which was his will and testament. And we will demand justice for Eden."

Associates of Zada's said he had deserted the military "since he could not bring himself to serve in an army that expels Jews from their homes."

They said Zada recently became religious and had left his home in Rishon Lezion to move to Tapuah, a known right-wing extremist hotbed.

Ariel Sharon on the attack:

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon issued a statement calling the attack “a criminal act of a bloodthirsty terrorist targeting innocent Israeli civilians.” He said that he instructed security officials to make the investigation of the incident a top priority.

“This terrorist incident is a purposeful attempt to harm relations between Israeli citizens,” Sharon said. “Terror of one citizen against others is the greatest danger to the future of Israel as a democracy. All of Israel, without regard to religion, race, or gender condemns this attack. The Israeli government is determined to defend its citizens of every sector.”

The Head Heeb has a quick and considered anaylsis.

Israel is leaving Gaza, and still the rockets are fired into the Gaza settlements. The latest attack killed a young Israeli woman.

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility. They are closely tied to Mahmoud Abbas's ruling Fatah party.

I don't think that Israel should consider negotiations with a ruling party which allows these attacks to be perpetrated by their close associates - on land that Israel will be vacating.

Why Do They Hate Us?

From James Taranto via MediaBackspin.

That's the question we've all grown sick and tired of hearing since Sept. 11, 2001. It's not that the query is inherently objectionable; understanding what motivates the enemy is obviously helpful in wartime. But the people who ask this question almost never genuinely seek to understand; rather, they have their own axes to grind against the U.S. or the West...

Now and then a terrorist actually takes the trouble to explain his motives. London's Daily Telegraph reports on the trial of the man who allegedly (and now confessedly) murdered Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh:

Mohammed Bouyeri, a baby-faced 27-year-old with dual Dutch-Moroccan nationality, broke his vow not to co-operate with the Amsterdam court by admitting shooting and stabbing his victim last November.Mp /> "I take complete responsibility for my actions. I acted purely in the name of my religion," he told its three-strong panel of judges.

"I can assure you that one day, should I be set free, I would do the same, exactly the same." . . .

Bouyeri then turned to the victim's mother, Anneke, in the public gallery, and told her he felt nothing for her. Mrs van Gogh watched as he read out from what appeared to be a statement: "I don't feel your pain. I have to admit that I don't have any sympathy for you. I can't feel for you because you're a non-believer."

This had nothing to do with Israeli "occupation" of "Palestinian lands," America's "unilateral invasion" of Iraq, "torture" of prisoners at Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib, the widening "income gap," or any of the other litany of complaints that the terror apologists trot out.

Respond With a Heavy Hand

Netanya mall suicide bomb blast kills 2, wounds dozens.

At least two people were killed and 37 people were wounded when a major explosion occurred at an intersection near the Sharon Mall in Netanya around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Sources close to the prime minister responded to the deadly attack, saying firmly that Israel would react with a heavy hand. If the Palestinian Authority does not deal with Islamic Jihad terrorist, then Israel will, officials told Channel 2.

Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.

Security services were investigation whether a link existed between the Netanya attack and a second attack - also carried out by Islamic Jihad - at the West Bank settlement of Shavei Shomron, which occurred just some 30 minutes earlier.

In that attack, a suicide attacker drove a stolen vehicle laden with gas balloons into the gate of the settlement, and exploded near the settlement's preschool. The bomber was the only casualty in that incident, which authorities now suspect may have been planned as a "blind" to distract security forces from the second bomber, then en route to Netanya.

An earlier (at 18:10) report suggests that the car explosion may have been an accident. The Jerusalem Post article on the suicide bomb that I linked to was updated at 21:10 and makes no suggestion that the car explosion was an accident.

The death toll has risen to 4 - all women. 90 people were injured. The car explosion was not an accident. Islamic Jihad again claimed responsibility. A truck laden with gas canisters exploded just inside the main entrance of Shavei Shomron - right near the preschool. The Palestinian driver, the only injured, was tied to the truck and was freed from the burning vehicle by Israeli security forces. The blast was apparently detonated by remote control. Rescuers of the driver found his right hand tied to the steering wheel and a large boulder weighing down the gas pedal.

News just in

The ghouls at Islamic Jihad tied the driver to the steering wheel and placed a large boulder on the pedal because they are frustrated with their desperate situation. Er, and because they are poor. The man tied to the wheel was selected because he did not suffer enough from poverty and did not seem desperate enough to carry out the martyrdom operation on his own accord.

After Disengagement...Hope?

...not if Hamas have anything to do with it.

They promise "not to serve the PA as a fig leaf", and will continue "bombarding Israel with mortars and rockets."

Fine. But the current (mockery of a) truce has revealed the major Hamas weakness - targeted assassinations. Hamas would only enter the (mockery of a) truce if Israel promised to halt targeted assassinations. For me, this has made the fear they have of the targeted assassinations policy almost tangible.

Hamas, continuing along this tack, should expect many more leaders to join Yassin and Rantisi.

Palestinian Perfidy

Israel are leaving Gaza and you would think that even the terrorists would realise that it's in their best interests to look after the existing infrastructure. Well, you would be wrong: 3 die in Qassam Rocket Attack.

Three workers, two Palestinian and one Chinese, were killed and five other Palestinian workers were injured Tuesday when a Qassam rocket slammed into a greenhouse in the Gush Katif settlement of Ganai Tal.

An IDF helicopter was sent to the scene to evacuate the injured to nearby hospitals.

The military wing of Islamic Jihad, the al-Quds Company, was quick to take responsibility for the attack. “At 1:55 PM we fired two Quds 2 rockets at the Zionist city of Sderot, which sits on Palestinian land that has been occupied since 1948. At 2:13 another cell fired two rockets at the Kfar Aza settlement.”

Media Undermines the Roadmap

Daniel Okrent of the NY Times has opened up more debate on the use of the "T-word" in a recent NY Times editorial.

I find it farcical that so many in the media refuse to call acts of terror in Israel by their name. The phrase "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" has become institutionalised in the masses on the left.

It is true that a terrorist may be regarded by some as a freedom fighter, but that doesn't absolve him from the terrorist label. If he deliberately targets civilians as a way of pursuing a political objective he then commits an act of terror. His objective is to intimidate and demoralise a civilian population.

Just because the goal may be described as legitimate, it doesn't mean that the means should not be described as terror. There are plenty of Palestinians who think "fighting Israel is legitimate" but who draw the line at the indiscriminate massacre of civilians in pizza parlours, discothèques and busses. They recognize an independent moral limit against slaughtering civilians.

It is interesting to note that the roadmap to a permanent two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict refers to "terror" or "terrorism" 10 times. In fact, the title of phase 1 specifically mentions an end to terror.

Phase I: Ending Terror And Violence, Normalizing Palestinian Life, and Building Palestinian Institutions

How can the media pretend to back the roadmap (in that they generally call for a negotiated solution to the conflict) whilst simultaneously denying the existence of something that the first phase stipulates must end?

The roadmap repeatedly calls for an end to terrorism as a condition for progression to further phases. The media undermines the roadmap by denying that terror exists, making a mockery of all those whose task it is to see that the roadmap gets implemented.

The Cause of Terror

I recently linked to a Hardvard study which busted the myth that terror is a consequence of poverty.

Now the Arab press has wieghed in on the issue agreeing that terror, rather than being linked to poverty, is intrinsically tied to cultural and religious factors.

MEMRI reports on several Arab columnists that have recently published articles critical of the view that the main motivation to terrorism is poverty or despair. They instead cite the role of cultural and religious factors in motivating terrorism, and particularly the incitement by sheikhs who encourage young men to conduct terror operations.

Religious factors? Who knew!

"The greatest mistake of the social and political commentators is their attributing the cause for the spreading of the phenomenon of terrorism in the Arab and Islamic world solely to the lack of social justice, the spreading of poverty, and the harsh social conditions in most of the Arab and Islamic countries.

"The socio-economic situation of most of the terrorists who participate in the criminal operations around the world is very good. The simple reason [for terrorism] is the terrifying brainwashing suffered by most of the Arab youth at the hands of 'religious clerics' and particularly at the hands of the extremists with backward views. [These 'clerics'] nourish the Muslim youth with various kinds of racist views and destructive extremist principles, and nurse them with hostility, hatred, and resentment towards other people and towards members of other divine religions."

Visit MEMRI for some extended excerpts from these articles. I highly recommend you read it all, but here is a little gem of a story I have picked out from a Saudi columnist.

"In one of his quests for paradise, a youth traveled to another country in order to kill a man accused of atheism, in order to get closer to Allah by killing him, and thus to reach paradise. Fate had it that the man accused of atheism was the first one to meet the youth in a cafe. He saw him sitting there and realized that he was a foreigner. The man addressed him, shook his hand, welcomed him, and asked if he might sit next to the youth. The latter gave his consent. They had a friendly talk, and got to like one another.

"Afterwards the youth asked him, 'Do you know so-and-so?' The man saw that the youth had mentioned him by name and was startled, but he controlled his emotions and asked the youth, 'Why are you inquiring about this man?' The youth said that the man was an evil atheist and that he intended to rescue people from his evildoing in order to get closer to Allah and to reach paradise. The man, who was by now quite amazed, said to the youth, 'How are you so certain that this man is an atheist deserving of death, and that killing him will bring you to paradise?' The youth responded, 'Some sheikhs told me so.'… The man said, 'Why don't these sheikhs aspire to reach paradise themselves, and why are they giving up for your sake [the merit of] carrying out this honorable deed which brings one to paradise?' The youth was embarrassed and said, 'I don't know.'

Civil War: The Only Answer

It's becoming increasingly clear that a Palestinian civil war will be a necessity if the lives of ordinary Palestinians are to improve.

Last weeks suicide bombing near the Karni crossing highlights this fact. (5 were killed and 10 wounded) The explosion did tremendous damage to the hub of agricultural trade where Palestinians are able to sell their goods to the Israeli market. Hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza are now unable to make a living off their main industry.

Bruce Thornton at Victor Davis Hanson sums it up

Quite simply, those Palestinians sincerely committed to the “two-state solution” must go after and kill those Palestinians who are committed to the destruction of Israel, and whose murders provoke Israel’s legitimate responses that unfortunately make life hard for the Palestinians. And yes, that means there must be a civil war. The so-called “moderate” Palestinians have to recognize that their aspirations are subverted by those among them who want to kill Israelis more than they want to live in freedom and prosperity, and that their suffering is caused by the actions of such terrorists that compel Israel to do whatever it can to protect its citizens, which after all is the primary obligation of any state.

Mahmoud Abbas needs to act. The most recent suicide attack was perpetrated on Tuesday night at the Orhan outpost in Gaza. Ariel Sharon promised a decisive response, but has since lowered the stick, giving Abbas what seems to be one last chance to prove his willingness to fight terror. Abbas does not need to end terror in one magic sweep. He needs to convince Israel that he is TRYING to end the terror.

With these incidents being so regular, it's difficult to fathom the thinking of the left when they question the need for checkpoints.

IDF officials assessed that the suicide bomber was headed for Gush Katif to perpetrate an attack there when he was detained at a checkpoint by security staff.

Shortly before the attack, security forces received a tip that the suspect was headed for the checkpoint, and upon his arrival, soldiers recognized him and ordered him out of his car.

At this point he was searched by Shin Bet agents, but they failed to find the explosives, which were hidden in his underwear.

The bomber detonated his explosives as he was being led by soldiers to a trailer for a second round of searches, according to procedure, three meters from the building's entrance.

People watch documentaries like checkpoint, recently screened in South Africa, and react with horror and dismay when a Palestinian is led away to be searched. The array of incidents similar to Tuesdays attack are conveniantly forgotten as their selective pity for the Palestinians being searched overcomes any sense of context and reason.

I say selective because I haven't heard any outcry for the damage done to the Palestinian's agricultural trade centre destroyed in last week's suicide bomb.

Do You Shirk Jihad?

An Open Letter from a Saudi Islamist to Those who Shirk Jihad

The Islamist website www.islahi.net recently posted an open letter from a Saudi sheikh urging all Muslims to join Jihad, and emphasizing the obligation to fight the Saudi rulers, who, he claims, are at the service of the infidels. The letter is signed by "Abu 'Abd Al-Rahman Al-Athari Sultan Ibn Bijad, of the occupied land of the two sacred mosques."

Koranic Verses Sanctioning Jihad

"You who shirk Jihad, Allah has said: 'Fight them until there is no more discord and Allah alone shall be worshipped' [8:39]. Don't you know Allah's words: 'Slay the idolaters wherever you find them and take them prisoner and besiege them and lay an ambush for them wherever you can' [9:5]? Allah has said: 'Fight them, so that God will chastise them at our hands and shame them. He will grant you victory over them, will satisfy the believers' spirit and remove vexation from their hearts' [9:14]. Allah has said: 'Fight those from among those who had been given Scriptures, who do not believe in Allah and in the last day and do not prohibit that which Allah and His Messenger prohibited and do not follow the true religion, until they pay the jizya [the poll tax] out of hand, while being humiliated' [9:29]. Allah has said: 'You who believe, the unbelievers who dwell around you; let them find you tough, and know that Allah is with those who fear Him' [9:123].

"You who shirk Jihad, what excuse can you give Allah while your brethren in the prisons of Abu Ghreib and Guantanamo and Al-Ruways and Al-Ha'ir are stripped naked? I believe you saw those pictures that came out of the Abu Ghreib prison. These pictures [also reflect the situation] of our brethren in the prisons of Israel, in America, and [in the prisons of] their collaborators in this region. You who shirk Jihad, the Crusaders and the Jews violate the honor of noble women and oppress the heroes of the [Islamic] nation in the detention camps of America, Israel, and their accomplices – so what are you waiting for?"

Go on Jihadis...what are you waiting for?

Ethical Dilemmas

An excellent Jerusalem Issue Brief presented by Major Gen. Amos Yadlin on the immensely difficult dilemmas faced by Israel in fighting their war for existence: Ethical Dilemmas in Fighting Terrorism.

Here is a brief extract but make sure you read the whole thing for it is good.

A new model of warfare - the counter-terrorism war - requires a new set of rules on how to fight it. The other side is fighting outside the rules and we have to create new ethical rules for the international law of armed conflict, in keeping with the traditional IDF concept of "the purity of arms."

Terror is easier to fight in non-democratic states. King Hussein used a lot of force in 1970, with no supreme court, and without being exposed to the media, and terror stopped in Jordan. In 1982 in Hama, Syrian President Assad killed 30,000 people and he got rid of Islamic fundamentalist terror. Yet Israel cannot use these means; we have to do it in an ethical way.

Our job is preventing terror. Yet we face a tragic dilemma. Whatever we decide when fighting terror, some innocent people are going to get hurt. On the one hand, there are the Israeli citizens that the terrorists want to kill. On the other hand, the terrorists are hiding behind innocent civilians. It is very important when people's lives are at stake that there is a moral understanding and precise rules for moral conduct.

How do we differentiate between terrorists and non-terrorists? Everyone who is directly involved in terror is a legitimate target. Those who are indirectly involved in terror are not a legitimate target.

Some asked if the collateral damage was producing future terrorists. We found that because of the level of incitement, the collateral damage only raised public support for terror from 95 to 96 percent.

In August 2002 we had all the leadership of Hamas in one room and we knew we needed a 2,000-pound bomb to eliminate all of them. Think about having Osama bin Laden and all the top leadership of al-Qaeda in one house. However, use of a 2,000-pound bomb was not approved - we used a much smaller bomb - and they all got up and ran away.

We should do the job at the checkpoints ethically, professionally, and as fast as we can because we have to care about the many times the ambulance is really carrying somebody who needs help.

The bottom line is that Israel has to fight terror because terror declared war on us. In the current war Israel has lost over 1,000 people - equivalent to the U.S. suffering 45,000 dead and 300,000 wounded. We can win, but we must do it ethically as the Jewish people, as a democratic state, and as IDF officers who respect our ethical profession.

Proud Lyncher Jailed for Life

proud Lyncher

The man whose savagery in the October, 2000 Ramallah lynching of two IDF soldiers was broadcast worldwide has finally been brought to justice.

An Israeli military court handed a life-sentence this week to the man who proudly displayed his blood-drenched hands after he joined a lynch-mob of other Arabs and carried out the grisly double murder. Vadim Norzitch and Yosef Avrahami were the two reserve soldiers killed in the lynching at a Ramallah police station in 2000.

Aziz Salha was part of the Arab crowd that attacked the two after they were brought to the "safety" of the Ramallah police station. In television footage of the brutal lynching, he was seen standing at the police station window after Norzitch’s body was thrown out of it, proudly displaying his blood-soaked hands to the murderous mob below.

Norzitch, 33, and his fellow reservist Yossi Avrahami, 38, had taken a wrong turn and ended up in Ramallah. They were spotted by local Arabs and attacked by what quickly became a large mob.

Salha arrived at the police station, spotted Norzitch lying on the ground with a knife in his back, grabbed the knife and stabbed the Israeli to death while holding him in a strangle-hold. He then entered the police station, went up to the second floor window and displayed his bloody hands to the howling crowd below.

The grisly footage, aired worldwide, was filmed by an Italian film crew - whose news agency later apologized to the Palestinian Authority for doing so. Several photographers who also filmed the scene that day were beaten by PA officers and had their cameras and film destroyed.

Earlier this month, the same IDF military court also sentenced Jihad A-Karim Azziz Rom, 26, to life plus an additional 20 years for participating in the same lynching.

Cycle of Terror Continues

The "cycle of violence" analogy used by the mainstream media implies that Israel could stop the violence simply by not responding to the next terror attack. If only.

A less naive cycle, is the "cycle of terror". This is the cycle of Israel making concessions, followed by more acts of terror, and then more Israeli concessions.

The latest example:

Harvard Study: Terror Not a Result of Poverty

The myth that terrorism is caused by poverty can finally rest in peace.  A John F. Kennedy School of Government researcher Alberto Abadie has published a study refuting the widely held belief that terrorism is produced by poverty, finding instead that terror is directly related to political freedom: Harvard Gazette: Freedom squelches terrorist violence.

Those like Ronnie Kasrils, who spit the lie at every opportunity, will no doubt choose to ignore the study. ("Internationally, Mr Kasrils said, the key challenge lay in addressing the fundamental causes of the anger and frustration that fuelled terrorism. These were poverty, underdevelopment and deprivation.")

A John F. Kennedy School of Government researcher has cast doubt on the widely held belief that terrorism stems from poverty, finding instead that terrorist violence is related to a nation’s level of political freedom.

Associate Professor of Public Policy Alberto Abadie examined data on terrorism and variables such as wealth, political freedom, geography, and ethnic fractionalization for nations that have been targets of terrorist attacks.

Abadie, whose work was published in the Kennedy School’s Faculty Research Working Paper Series, included both acts of international and domestic terrorism in his analysis.

Though after the 9/11 attacks most of the work in this area has focused on international terrorism, Abadie said terrorism originating within the country where the attacks occur actually makes up the bulk of terrorist acts each year. According to statistics from the MIPT Terrorism Knowledge Base for 2003, which Abadie cites in his analysis, there were 1,536 reports of domestic terrorism worldwide, compared with just 240 incidents of international terrorism.

Before analyzing the data, Abadie believed it was a reasonable assumption that terrorism has its roots in poverty, especially since studies have linked civil war to economic factors. However, once the data was corrected for the influence of other factors studied, Abadie said he found no significant relationship between a nation’s wealth and the level of terrorism it experiences.

“In the past, we heard people refer to the strong link between terrorism and poverty, but in fact when you look at the data, it’s not there. This is true not only for events of international terrorism, as previous studies have shown, but perhaps more surprisingly also for the overall level of terrorism, both of domestic and of foreign origin,” Abadie said.

Instead, Abadie detected a peculiar relationship between the levels of political freedom a nation affords and the severity of terrorism. Though terrorism declined among nations with high levels of political freedom, it was the intermediate nations that seemed most vulnerable.

Like those with much political freedom, nations at the other extreme - with tightly controlled autocratic governments - also experienced low levels of terrorism. Though his study didn’t explore the reasons behind the trends he researched, Abadie said it could be that autocratic nations’ tight control and repressive practices keep terrorist activities in check, while nations making the transition to more open, democratic governments - such as currently taking place in Iraq and Russia - may be politically unstable, which makes them more vulnerable. “When you go from an autocratic regime and make the transition to democracy, you may expect a temporary increase in terrorism,” Abadie said.

Go read it all. (Link via LGF)

Massive Terror Plot Foiled

Palestinian Terrorists Planned to Detonate Explosive-Laden Ambulance in Jerusalem

The Shin Bet security services and the IDF announced Tuesday the arrest of 16 Palestinians from Bethlehem who planned a series of large-scale terror attacks in Jerusalem that included sending two pairs of suicide bombers to the Mea She'arim neighborhood, an attack using an explosive-laden ambulance, and an attack on a bus carrying worshippers to Rachel's Tomb near Bethlehem. Some of those arrested, including the would-be suicide bombers, served in the Palestinian national security services. The cells received instructions from Palestinian militant leaders in Gaza.

Shock! Horror!

Netherlands calls for Hezbollah to be placed on EU terrorism list.

THE HAGUE (AFP) - Dutch Foreign Minister Ben Bot called for the Lebanese Hezbollah organization to be placed on the European Union list of terrorist organizations in a bid to dry up its financing from Europe.

However Bot acknowledged that there is no unanimity on this subject in the European Union. Some governments make a distinction between Hezbollah as a political party with a dozen members in the Lebanese parliament and a broad program of social works, and its militant military wing responsible for numerous deadly attacks.

The Netherlands also has drawn a distinction between Hezbollah's civilian and armed wings, but Bot told parliament they were both dedicated to the same ends.

Hezbollah, "the Party of God," formed by Iranian Revolutionary Guards after the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, seeks the "liberation" of all occupied Arab lands, including Jerusalem.

Suffer the Little Children

"It's immoral to send someone so young. They should have sent an adult who understands the meaning of his deeds."

The words of Samira Abdullah, the mother of the filthy ghoul who murdered and maimed innocent civilians yesterday in Tel Aviv.

The bomber was just 16 years old. This reflects the disturbing reality of the indoctrination into a culture of hate and suicide that awaits most young and easily influenced Palestinians. The Palestinian Opinion Pulse for July 2004 highlights this trend. The majority of the older (and wiser) Palestinian population do not support these murderous killing sprees (although the proportion that do support suicide attacks is still unacceptably high). I refer you to the many radical politicians who admire suicide bombers, like the UK's Jenny Tongue from the Liberal Democrats. This serves as proof that the minds of these politicians are no more developed than the minds of an irrational hormone influenced delinquent.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) calimed responsibility for yesterday's blast, in what was an obvious attempt to influence Israeli opinions on the disengagement plan.

Cycle of Palestinian Terror

"The Cycle of Terror": Israel offers concessions --> Palestinians blow up civilians.

Suicide Bomber Strikes Market in Tel Aviv

At least 4 people were killed and 32 are wounded.

Israel's biggest concession is that they consider themselves at war with the perpetrators of terrorism, not the Palestinian people - even though this terrorist war was started by the official Palestinian leadership -- and polls have consistently shown a Palestinian majority in support of suicide attacks.

And I'm not just making this up. The following graphs come from the June 2004 Palestinian Opinion Pulse, which is a poll conducted by the Jerusalem Media and Communication Centre Public Opinion Polls.

Quadruple Suicide Attack Thwarted

I just saw a video that these creatures made prior to their attempt at mass murder. They looked so happy and proud, thinking that they would kill some Jews. But, they failed.

GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli troops shot dead four Palestinian gunmen who were infiltrating Israel's border with northern Gaza, witnesses said, as the army continued a wide-scale offensive in the area to weed out rocket launchers.

A military source said soldiers had received earlier information about militants who planned to infiltrate into southern Israel and carry out an attack in a town in the area. Troops spotted four gunmen wearing explosives belts cutting through the border fence, and killed them, the source said.

The sheer gall of Reuters in calling them gunmen even as they acknowledge that they were wearing explosive belts is bewildering. It is not even certain that they were carrying guns.

Shin Bet Publishes Terror Report

Jewish Voices will be seething. A Shin Bet report says that there has been an 84% decrease in the number of Israelis killed in terror attacks since the completion of the first portion of the security fence.

Shin Bet report released on Monday that summed up the first four years since the outbreak of violence in September 2000, revealed that terrorist organizations operating in Samaria succeeded in perpetrating 6 suicide bomb attacks inside Israel in which thirty Israelis were killed since the fence's completion. 73 suicide bomb attacks killed 293 Israelis since the outbreak of violence in September 2000. A total of 1017 Israelis and foreigners have been killed in terror attacks in the past four years.

The report details many facts that we didn't need a report to tell us. Amongst the fndings - Interrogation proves Arafat involved in terror attacks, More Israeli Arabs involved in terror, Cooperation between terror organizations increasing, Hizbullah involvement in Palestinian terror.
Of course mention is made of the vile act of using collections masquerading as charity to fund terrorist operations.

Read about the report here.

Article from a well respected Arab daily alleges that an Arab country may be assisting Israel against Hamas. There are too many "unknown sources" for me to pay much attention to this article.

The London-based Arabic daily Al Hayat reports that an Arab intelligence agency has been cooperating with the Israeli Mossad, providing it with significant and sensitive information about Hamas bureaus in Damascus, Beirut, Teheran, and the Persian Gulf. A Western intelligence source hints that the country may be Egypt, claiming that Cairo is seeking to wean Damascus and the Palestinian terrorist organization from their alliance with Iran.

I don't think there is a Fatwah big enough for this story if it proves to be true.

15 Year Suicide Bomber Apprehended

More proof substantiating the problem with the family reunification program, which allows Palestinians to gain access to Israeli ID cards by marrying Israeli Arabs.

A 15-year old Palestinian was apprehended Tuesday on his way to executing a suicide bombing, Army sources – quoted on Israel Radio – disclosed Thursday evening.

Three other Palestinians from the village Yamun in the Jenin region were also apprehended for having planned the attack and assisting to transport the 7 KG suicide belt.

One of the three, Za'el Adel Hara, was apprehended in Dir Hanna in the Galilee on Tuesday, and he admitted to having transported the device hidden in a sack of flour. He told interrogators that the belt had already been given to the youth, who received NIS 1,000 in order to commit suicide.

He said that the hidden suicide belt had been transported along with other household items of his by a Palestinian who is an Israeli resident in possession of an Israeli ID card.

The Palestinian who transported the goods received his ID card as part of the Israeli family unification program. He received NIS 2,000 from Adel Hara to transport the goods from Yamun southwards to Jerusalem, and from there – along Israeli roads – to the Merar region in the Galilee. There, he and his family waited in a tent along with his family amidst a group of illegal Palestinian workers.

Naming the Enemy

I have just made the mistake of playing the Islamic snuff film showing the beheading of an innocent man. I am watching it now. Seeing him sitting in front of the 5 evil preaching Islamic beasts - wimpering, crying, and swaying - is too much for me. I can't bare it. I will only listen to the rest. My eyes cannot handle this. But the sound. His screams of terror. Words cannot describe this.

The enemy is not 'terrorism'. It is Islamic terrorism. Make no mistake about it. We are not seeing Colombian terrorists beheading innocent people on TV. Doing it in God's name. These monsterly beasts believe that they are serving God. Nothing will ever convince them that they are wrong.

It's horrific.

(I couldn't even listen to the whole thing so I turned it off midway. )

Unbelievable. SABC1 Xhosa News had the sheer gall to screen the WHOLE video on SABC1 on Tuesday night at 19:30. When kids could have been watching. Oh, but they did screen a warning that the video contains violent and gruesome footage. I'm sure that stopped all kids from watching. SABC spokesperson Paul Setsetse said that he apologises to the public.

"We regret that incident. It's a mistake and we are taking action against the individual responsible. We hope the public will accept our apology," he said.
If this is against their editorial policy then just how did it happen? The SABC obviously has policies which they pay very little lip service to.

I was wrong. SABC1 did not warn its viewers of the gruesome nature of the video, according to the Star. The Star also reveals the name of the producer, Masakhane Ngcangatha, who aired the video and has since been suspended.

More Terror in Jerusalem

The Palestinians claim that the intifada is an uprising by unarmed civilians targeting an army of occupation. The reality is that it is a war perpetrated by armed ideologists targeting mostly unarmed civilians of a nation that offered to end the occupation.

And unfortunately today provided more proof of this as a Palestinian women blew herself up in an attempt to viciously massacre scores of unarmed Israeli civilians.

An 18-year-old female Palestinian suicide bomber blew herself up near a crowded bus station in Jerusalem Wednesday afternoon killing two border policemen and wounding 16 other civilians, including four seriously, police and rescue officials said.

The explosion occurred at 3:40 p.m. at the city's northern French Hill intersection when Zeina Issa Abu Salem, from the Askar refugee camp in Nablus, blew up the 5kg explosive device in her possession. The French Hill intersection has been the scene of repeated bombings over four years of violence.

According to police reports, the bomber's intention had been to explode at the bus stop where a crowd of 20 to 30 people were standing, and it was the presence of Border Police guards that prevented a potentially much more lethal attack.

The bomber blew herself up as an Israeli border policeman approached her and asked to see her documents, police sources said. It appeared that two Border Police officers were killed in the blast; however, this has not been confirmed. An eyewitness told Israel Radio that the terrorist had been stopped by a Border Policeman, who began checking her documents an asking her questions. "At one point, the terrorist, who was carrying a bag, made a weird backward motion with her head, and that is when the explosion happened," the eyewtiness, who asked not be named, told the Radio.

Jewish Voices, famouse for marching against the "horribly evil apartheid wall", hand in hand with a radical Palestinian group that supports suicide bombings, must be delighted that the construction of the barrier in this area had been halted.

Not long ago the government halted construction on the part of the fence near Jerusalem, while they continue to debate over its route.

The attack was claimed by Al Aksa Martyrs Bigades. They are the military wing of Nobel Peace Prize winner Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement.

Suicide Bomber Injures 5

3 IDF soldiers and 2 Palestnians were injured. The blast occurred at the West Bank checkpoint for the Qalqilyah-area village of Hableh. Qalqilya is an area where the security barrier consists of huge concrete sections to prevent sniper fire. Qalqilya is on the 'green line'.
Suicide bomber injures 3 soldiers in West Bank blast

The attack came hours after three Fatah Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades terrorists were killed by the IAF.

One of the terrorists killed was Mahmoud Abu Halifa - a leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent group directly linked to Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement.

Halifa was responsible for two shooting attacks in the Jenin region, in which two Israelis were killed. He was also responsible for the recent detonation of an explosive device at the Qalandiya checkpoint last month, in which two Palestinians were killed. Halifa was also in touch with Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

The Whole World Is Watching

Victor Davis Hanson's latest piece in the National Review is brilliant. Go read it all.

Chechen Islamicists burn up Russian airliners and shoot schoolgirls — and say they are victims, deprived of the chance for their own autonomous theocracy. Beheaders in Iraq decapitate Americans, Pakistanis, Koreans, Japanese, and Nepalese — only to claim that these are infidels guilty of trying to build roads and bridges. Italian humanitarians and charity workers are kidnapped by Islamicists. In the "holy" city of Najaf, religious extremists bomb innocents, not only without gratitude for those who freed them from Saddam, but full of hatred for those who would bring them consensual government.

Islamic terrorists kidnap French journalists and threaten them with execution, demanding that a sovereign nation previously known for its appeasement of radical Middle Eastern rogue regimes overturn a law protecting secular life in its schools. Hamas "freedom fighters" blow up buses inside Israel and call the dead children Zionists who belong in the sea.

Islamic fascists incinerate dozens in Madrid, and claim they have a right to do so because of the Spanish role in ridding the world of the Hussein clan — or was the real rub the Reconquista? Australians in Bali are engulfed in flame by car bombers for the felony of being Western visitors in an Islamic enclave.

Meanwhile, back in the United States, as in the major capitals of Europe, Islamic terrorists are arrested periodically, seeking to trump the foul work of September 11. Theocrats blew apart General Massoud in Afghanistan, attempted to kill President Musharraf of Pakistan, and now claim that they plan to do the same to our own leaders here in the United States. A few thousand Islamic males made an entire nation take off their shoes at their airports and changed forever the daily routine of 300 million Americans — and promise they are not done yet.

Ask yourself: What do a Russian ten-year-old, a poor black farmer in Darfur, an elderly pensioner in Israel, a stockbroker in New York, and a U.N. aid worker in Afghanistan have in common? In the last three years, they have all died in similar ways: Unarmed and civilian, they were murdered by a common cowardly method fueled by a fascist ideology.

More Terror Attempts

Don't expect to see this reported on in the local press. They only report on the succesful attacks and then describe them as "breaking the recent calm".

A Palestinian man transporting a 10-kilogram (22-pound) bomb was caught in the West Bank after troops chased his taxi and he threw the explosives out of the cab's window, a security official said Friday.

Soldiers began chasing the taxi after it tried to evade a roadblock outside the West Bank city of Nablus on Thursday, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Qurie's Call for Murder Thwarted - For Now...

The IDF have found a suicide-bomb belt near Nablus.

The IDF Tuesday thwarted a suicide bomb attack that was to have taken place in central Israel in the coming days after finding a seven-kg. explosives belt hidden in a barrel at a house northwest of Nablus. An intelligence tip-off revealed the whereabouts of the bomb.

On Tuesday the security establishment registered 47 warnings of plans by terrorists to launch attacks against Israelis. Border Police sappers blew up two pipe bombs that had been placed on the main route linking Jerusalem to Hebron near El-Khader, west of Bethlehem.

After killing 14 Hamas terrorists earlier in the week, PA Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie said that "responses will be justified".

Also in the news: Israel frees 161 Palestinian prisoners

Israel began freeing 161 Palestinian prisoners from its jails on Tuesday in the largest mass release in more than seven months, Israeli security officials said.

The Palestinian Authority called the move meaningless, and Israeli officials said it was meant not as a good will gesture but as a way to ease conditions in prisons overflowing with Palestinians rounded up during nearly four years of conflict.

Targeting School Children

While the horrific chaos in Russia was unfolding, the Palestinians thought that they could cash in on some ruthless child murdering.

Palestinians fired two Kassam rockets at the Negev city of Sderot Friday. The rockets landed near the Afikim kindergarten at an hour when the children were arriving. Five people were treated for shock.

Israel: Terrorists Won't Sleep Quietly

Al-Reuters have called the Be'erv Sheva bomb blasts the "first such attacks in the Jewish State in nearly six months", but as Richard points out...they are wrong.

Richard also points out that that large portions of the media don't acknowledge the myriads of attacks thwarted by the IDF.

Back to the Al-Reuters story: Israel Threatens Syria After Hamas Bombings

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel threatened Syria Wednesday over what officials said was complicity in Palestinian suicide bombings that killed 16 people in the first such attacks in the Jewish state in nearly six months.

Security officials said the Israeli military would answer Tuesday's twin bus bombings with a renewed assassination campaign against leaders of Hamas, the militant group behind the attacks, both in the Palestinian territories and abroad.

"Whoever is responsible for using terror against us won't sleep quietly," Israeli army chief Moshe Yaalon told a parliamentary committee.

UPDATE 02/01/2001 at 14:00
More info on Israel faulting Syria in the bombing.

Israeli leaders warned Syria Wednesday that it bears the blame for a double suicide bombing in Beersheba by Hamas militants because it harbors the group's leadership, and they hinted at possible retaliation.

15 Killed, 100 Wounded In Twin Bus Bombings In Be'er Sheva

After scores of failed attacks the vicious mass murderers from Hamas have eventually succeeded.

Two suicide bombers exploded almost simultaneously on two buses in central Be'er Sheva on Tuesday, Southern Command Police commander Dudi Cohen said.

The explosions took place on buses numbers 12 and 63, traveling opposite the municipality building on Yitzhak Riger Street at 2:55 p.m.

Magen David Adom said 12 people were killed in the attacks, all of whom died at the scene. 100 people were wounded and taken to Soroka Hospital not far from the site of the attack. Seven are listed as critical; 12 are listed as serious, and the rest of the wounded are listed in light-to moderate condition. One of those fighting for his life in Soroka's operating theatre is a three-year-old child, Channel 1 TV reported.

ZAKA (disaster victims association) reported all the fatalities were on the buses. Hamas in Bethlehem issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attacks in the name of their Hebron Brigade, saying it was in response to the assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will hold an emergency meeting with top Defense Ministry officials in Tel-Aviv later this evening to formulate Israel's response. Sharon said in response to the attack that "the war against terror will continue without letup. This is both the government's and my personal policy." Israeli officials said the attack was a further sign that terrorist groups, with the backing of Iran and Hizbullah, were trying to scuttle the disengagement plan, Israel Radio reported.

The two buses were full of mothers and kids doing last minute shopping before Israeli kids go back to school on Wednesday. I appeal to everyone to recite Psalm 20 every morning and evening.

SatelliteThe map shows Be’er Sheva is only few kilometers away from Hebron. Constructions on sections of the security fence designed to separate the two cities are yet to start. When the construction to separate the two cities does start, you can fully expect Jewish Voices SA to cry and moan about it. They consider the inconvenience caused to Palestinians a greater sin than the heinous murdering of Israeli civilians. I would love for Ivor Chipkin to have to catch an Israeli bus to work every day of his life.

Shhh...listen...can you hear that silence? Its the absence of any noise from the ICJ about terrorism in Israel.

The Terror Attempts Continue

On Wednesday Naeem Jenna of the Media Review Network spoke on SAFM. Naeem responded to a caller's request that he acknowledge suicide bombings in Israel by asking the caller when last an Israeli civilian was killed by a Palestinian. "This has not happened for some time now" Naeem pointed out. But Naeem is trying to deceive us. Everyday Israel receives terror threats and hardly a day goes by without an attack being prevented. Or, in this case - unsuccesfully perpetrated.

Palestinians fired a mortar shell before dawn Friday at the Gaza Strip settlement bloc of Gush Katif, where it landed on a house. There were no injuries, although the house was damaged.

In the Gaza Strip settlement of Kfar Darom, Palestinians opened fire at an Israel Defense Forces post before dawn, and troops returned fire. No injuries were reported.

On Thursday evening, an explosive device was detonated near an Egged bus traveling on the Jerusalem-Hebron road, near the Al-Arub refugee camp. No injuries were reported, although the bus, line 160, was damaged.

In Sderot on Thursday, five residents were treated for shock after two Qassam rockets fired from Gaza landed in the city. In response to the launches, the IDF set up roadblocks to cut the Gaza Strip into three isolated sections.

There were also other incidents in Gaza on Thursday: Four mortar shells were fired at the settlement of Morag; IDF forces found a 40-kilogram bomb south of the Karni checkpoint; and there were a few exchanges of gunfire with Palestinian forces. No one was hurt in these incidents.

Telling It Like It Is

MEMRI have translated an interview with Journalist and former Kuwaiti communications minister Dr. Sa'ad bin Tefla. Dr Sa'ad says something amazing: Zionism and Imperialism have Nothing to do with Our Culture of Violence.

Journalist and former Kuwaiti communications minister Dr. Sa'ad bin Tefla was interviewed on Jordanian television about the culture of violence in Arab countries. Dr. bin Tefla rejected the notion that this can be blamed on Israel or the U.S.,, and instead blamed cultural roots, frustration, religious extremism, and intra-Arab violence. The following are excerpts from the interview:

'It is Wrong to Say that Violence is the Result of Occupation'

"It is wrong to say that violence is the result of occupation. The French occupation left Algeria after a million fell, and then within less than a decade 10,000 Algerians were butchered in Algeria by other Algerians in the name of Islam – that is more than even Israel could have butchered during the period of the Intifada.

"This violence has cultural roots, and is unconnected to the occupation. And there are those who justify it. I do not want it to be understood in any way from my words that I am defending and justifying the occupation. But I say that this logic, which I reject, is [used] as justification to the [violence] that takes place in Iraq and in other places."

'The Number Killed in Algeria and Killed by Other Arab Regimes Surpasses the Number of Palestinians Killed by Israel'

"Iraq was occupied [by the U.S.] a year ago. [However], before that, there was violence in Iraq that killed over one million Iraqis, Iranians, Kurds, Kuwaitis, and others. This was not done by the Zionists, the occupation, or America. This was done by Arabs and Muslims of Baghdad.

"The number killed in Algeria and killed by other Arab regimes surpasses the number of Palestinians killed by Israel. Those who were slaughtered in Saudi Arabia a few days ago were peaceful Muslims who were walking in the street… There is no occupation in Saudi Arabia, no American bases, no American presence or American army…

"I maintain that there is, unfortunately, a culture of violence that existed before the Americans came to Iraq and the Gulf, even before the Israeli occupation of Palestine, and before the American occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq.

"In my opinion, it is [precisely] this comprehensive logic that is harming these young people and making them think there was [once] a good [Islamic] empire reaching from China in the East to Andalusia [in the west], including Chechnya…"

Go and read the whole thing.

1929 Remembered

Err...if we give up the West Bank there will be peace...right?

Hebron's Jews mark 1929 massacre

Some 1,000 people gathered in Hebron on Thursday afternoon at a ceremony commemorating 75 years since the 1929 Hebron massacre. Sixty-seven Jews were killed and 70 wounded in the surprise attack by Arabs.

Knesset Speaker Ruby Rivlin spoke to some 1,000 people in Hebron on Thursday at a ceremony commemorating 75 years since the 1929 Hebron massacre - a surprise attack by Arabs who killed 67 Jews and wounded 70 from among a community of 800 Jews. Although the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini, had been inciting to violence that August, the Jews of Hebron trusted the good relationships they had with their Arab neighbors. After the massacre, the survivors were expelled from the city by the British.

Palestinian Rocket Hits Israeli Shopping Center

Clear sign that Hamas don't want Israel to leave Gaza.

A child was lightly injured and 34 people suffered from shock when a Qassam rocket landed yesterday afternoon in a bustling shopping center in Sderot. The rocket hit near 2:30 P.M. when hundreds of people were doing their grocery shopping for the weekend. It hit the hood of a car parked a few meters from the entrance to the Hypernetto supermarket, badly damaging it and other cars in the area.

Wall or Fence?

The image represents the proportion of the Israeli security barrier that is a wall, compared to the proportion that is a fence. One of the concerns Israel voiced to the ICJ was the use of prejudicial terminology before the hearing even began. In titling the case: “Legal Consequences of the Construction of a Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory”, the Court adopted the political and prejudicial terminology of the request itself. The use of the term “wall”, when in fact only 3.8 percent of the fence is a concrete barrier and over 96% consists of wire fences with access and crossing points, was clearly propagandist.

The graph below represents the number of attempted and executed terrorists attacks carried out from the West Bank - before and after construction of the fence began.

Terrorist Bombs West Bank Checkpoint

Jerusalem on alert as bomber hits Kalandia checkpoint
( Do yourself a favour and register on JPost.com. It's free and you only have to do it once. That way all links to JPOST will work.)

Palestinian terrorists set off a bomb 200 meters south of the Kalandia checkpoint at about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, killing two Palestinians and wounding 16 people, six of whom are Border Policemen. The terrorist had planned to blow himself up in Jerusalem, but due to the presence of security forces he fled and left the bomb in a bag, which h later detonated with a cell phone. He knew he would be killing Palestinians as he detonated the bomb, because Palestinians were waiting to get through the crossing.

“The Fatah Al-Aksa Martyrs' Brigades and the Tanzim, linked to Yasser Arafat, claimed responsibility in a statement to foreign media. Zakariya Zubeydi, 29, a leader of the Al-Aksa Brigades in Jenin, told The Associated Press that the original plan was to carry out an attack in Jerusalem, but that the man carrying the explosives was forced to abandon them near the Kalandia checkpoint as security forces closed in.

"We found ourselves forced to detonate it (the bomb) at the spot," Zubeydi said, adding that the group is sorry for the Palestinian casualties.”

Israel has thwarted 90 suicide bombings since January.

Arafat's terror gang claims responsibility for TA bomb

Just as the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the TA bombing, Yasser Arafat accused Israel of masterminding the bombing. (See ties between Fatah and AAMB here.)

Arafat said: "We are against such kinds of bombings, and you must never forget that the Israelis are completely behind it as they have been in the past." (emphasis added.)

This is the man whom Mbeki says there can be no peace without.

Female soldier killed, 34 wounded in TA bombing

Sgt. Maayan Naim, 19, from Bat Yam was killed and over 30 were wounded when a bomb exploded behind a bus stop near the old central bus station in South Tel-Aviv's Har Zion Boulevard Sunday morning.

Maayan was laid to rest Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. at the military cemetary in Holon.

11 people remain hospitalized in Tel Aviv hospitals, one of whom is in a serious condition

Following the explosion, Jerusalem Post notes increasing support amongst Israeli Arabs for the security barrier: 'I used to be against the fence, now I'm for it'

Sami Mcarah, a 29-year-old Arab Israeli resident of Jaffo got off a bus at Tel Aviv's old bus station just minutes before a bomb went off on Sunday that killed one woman and injured 30 others.

"I used to be opposed to the security fence, but now I support it, and I'm going to start a foundation to support the fence's construction" Mcarah told Israel Radio.

"The terrorist had no intention just to hurt Jews, but he went out to kill as many people as possible. The Palestinians are stupid for what they're doing, they're not achieving anything and in the end they will only turn us Israeli Arabs against them," said Mcarah.

Major suicide bombing in Jerusalem thwarted

Acting on pinpoint information security forces were able to thwart a man carrying a 10 kg bomb in a school bag.

The sources said Shin Bet agents and IDF troops closed in on a trio of Palestinians from the Nablus area at the A-Ram neighborhood at the northern tip of the capital Tuesday night. They told interrogators that they had been sent by a Tanzim cell which was receiving orders from Hizbullah in Lebanon. The trio included an 18-year-old suicide bomber and two men escorting him to the city. The head of the cell told interrogators they were waiting for a fourth Palestinian man who was to deliver them a suicide bomb belt, the security sources said. Acting on this information, security forces were able to locate that man traveling in a taxi stopped at the Akraba roadblock near Nablus. He was carrying a school bag which contained a powerful 10-kilo bomb, which sappers later detonated.

Another attack was thwarted in the Gaza strip.

Alert guards at an outpost in the northern Gaza Strip spotted two armed men attempting to sneak into the nearby Jewish settlement of Dugit and shot them dead before dawn Thursday.

In a search after daylight, troops located the bodies of the Palestinian infiltrators just 30 meters away. They discovered they had been wearing IDF uniforms and were armed with Klashnikov assault rifles, ammunition clips and hand grenades. One apparently had a flak vest.

The Intifada is over

Charles Krauthammer’s says in his latest column that it's becoming increasingly obvious that the intifada is over. (Thanks LGF)

WASHINGTON — While no one was looking, something historic has happened in the Middle East. The Palestinian intifada is over, and the Palestinians have lost.

For Israel, the victory is bitter. The last four years of terrorism have killed almost 1,000 Israelis and maimed thousands of others. But Israel has won strategically. The intent of the intifada was to demoralize Israel, destroy its economy, bring it to its knees and thus force it to withdraw and surrender to Palestinian demands, just as Israel withdrew in defeat from southern Lebanon in May 2000.

That did not happen. Israel’s economy was certainly wounded, but it is growing again. Tourism had dwindled to almost nothing at the height of the intifada, but tourists are returning. And the Israelis were never demoralized. They kept living their lives, the young people in particular returning to cafes and discos and buses just hours after a horrific bombing. Israelis turned out to be a lot tougher and braver than the Palestinians had imagined.

The end of the intifada does not mean the end of terrorism. There was terrorism before the intifada and there will be terrorism to come. What has happened, however, is an end to systematic, regular, debilitating, unstoppable terror — terror as a reliable weapon. At the height of the intifada, there were 9 suicide attacks in Israel killing 85 Israelis in just one month (March 2002). In the last three months, there have been none.

The overall level of violence has been reduced by more than 70 percent. How did Israel do it? By ignoring its critics and launching a two-pronged campaign of self-defense.

First, Israel targeted terrorist leaders — attacks so hypocritically denounced by Westerners who, at the same time, cheer the hunt for, and demand the head of, Osama bin Laden. The top echelon of Hamas and other terror groups has been either arrested, killed, or driven underground. The others are now so afraid of Israeli precision and intelligence — the last Hamas operative to be killed by missile was riding a motorcycle — that they are forced to devote much of their time and energy to self-protection and concealment.

Second, the fence. Only about a quarter of the separation fence has been built, but its effect is unmistakable. The northern part is already complete, and attacks into northern Israel have dwindled to almost nothing.

This success does not just save innocent lives. It changes the strategic equation of the whole conflict.
