Syria has called on South Africa to become more involved in key Middle East issues. Its no secret that South Africa is keen to upgrade our foreign diplomatic status but I think that all countries involved in the Middle East conflict should resist South African involvement.
If a country fails to protect the safety and security of their own citizens then why should they be trusted with the safety and security of people in the Middle East?
For an overview of what I mean read today's Mail & Guardian editorial on our presidents' 'crime denial' problem: A new age of denial.
South Africa lacks the impartiality to be at all involved in the Middle East, not only has SA proved to be the most hostile regime outside the Arab/Islamic world to Israel, SA has actually positioned itself among the most radical Arab-Islamic regimes-Iran,Syria,Libya, Hamas and Hezbullah.
Countries like Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Oman have proved themselves to be more moderate and more fitting to play a role than South Africa.
