In between penning letters to major newspapers across the country equating Israel with Nazism, our minister of Intelligence, Ronnie Kasrils, has been spending his time (and our money for that matter) strengthening South Africa's ties with our totalitarian neighbour to the north, Zimbabwe. Zimbabwean news site ZWnews.com is reporting that in a ceremony last month in Cape Town, Kasrils on behalf of the South African government, signed an agreement to increase collaboration in defence and intelligence with Zimbabwe.
But if propping up tin pot dictators wasn’t bad enough, Kasrils is reported to have applauded Zimbabwe as a model for African progress. In classic Kasrilspeak Ronnie praised ‘the advances and successes’ made by Zimbabwe since black majority rule in the early 1980's. Kasrils said that both countries shared ‘a common world view’ and that they would ‘march forward shoulder to shoulder’. Advances and successes? What is Ronnie smoking? Zimbabwe is a nation whose economy is in tatters, where poverty and unemployment is endemic and political repression rife. Let's look at some facts.
A staggering 80% of the population are unemployed and live below the poverty line. Inflation is in hyper drive at an almost unbelievable 1200% and average per capital income is a mere $340 per annum. With an average life expectancy of just 37, the shocking state of public health is evident. And the state of freedom is just as bad, with Zimbabwe rating 7 on Freedom House’s Freedom Index (with 1 being totally free and 7 being totally unfree). This is how they characterise the political situation in their latest Freedom in the World report.
‘Zimbabwe's descent into the ranks of the world's most repressive states continued unabated in 2005, the result of a significant decline in both political rights and civil liberties for Zimbabweans. The government of long-time president Robert Mugabe persisted in cracking down on independent media, civil society, and political opponents.’ |
After the official ceremony, a journalist challenged Kasrils on the moral hypocrisy of signing this agreement. ‘How can South Africa, with a good human rights track record, sign agreements with Zimbabwe, which had a poor human rights record’, the journalist asked. Kasrils responded by apologising to his Zimbabwean counterpart, Didymus Mutasa, for the question and retorted that ‘We have very strong ties with our neighbour and we are indebted to our neighbour for achieving freedom and liberty.’ Why is it that when it comes to the suffering of Palestinians Kasrils’ ‘Jewish’ conscience obliges him to speak out, but when it comes to the suffering of Zimbabweans his ‘African’ conscience is not pricked in the slightest?
Even more laughable than Kasrils’ response to the journalists’ embarrassing question was that of Didymus Mutasa (Zimbabwe’s minister for National Security). Playing the role of the Good Samaritan, Mutasa asked that the ‘Lord forgive him (the journalist) for he does not know what he is saying’. Kasrils, being a self-declared atheist, must have wanted to cringe. But with Kasrils third world solidarity always trumps principles.
While Zimbabwe’s current state of affairs may make veteran Commies like Kasrils nostalgic about their days in old Soviet Union, the majority of South Africans do not share this apocalyptic worldview. So why is Kasrils being allowed to masquerade as our Foreign minister? He is causing our country immeasurable diplomatic harm. For he has made it apparent to all, that he does not support a foreign policy based on human rights (the soul of Nepad) but rather ‘marching forward shoulder to shoulder’ with developing world despots and Islamist extremists in a jihad against Israel and the West.

Anthony, you stole my thunder for tomorrows post.
So seeing that you raised it, what do you think about our good ministers travels? I am sure Assad must have been in 2 minds when he met Kasrils. Could he hug him like an anti-Zionist brother even though he was Jewish?

Mike,
Sorry to jump the gun.
Assad has said that the Israelis are worse than the Nazis so I think they would get on well even though Kasrils has some sort of Jewish heritage.
Do you think that Kasrils is directing South African foreign policy?

I RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING EMAIL FROM THE EDITOR OF THE MAIL AND GUARDIAN IN RESPONSE TO MY QUERY:
Please take me off your mailing list.
Peace, Ferial
Dear Ferial,
Check out the latest news about The Minister of Intelligence on the
SUPERNATURAL blog.
Is The Mail and Guardian asleep?
Or are you colluding?

Anthony, I think Kasrils has been given an excessive and disproportional role in SA foreign policy. Why did he sign that agreement with Zim? Where was the Defence minister or the deputy defence minister or the foreign minister or the deputy foreign minister? Why Kasrils? Mbeki must be aware of this and must have sanctioned it. Perhaps he is being groomed to be our next Foreign Minister.

Mike,
I reckon he might well be the next Foreign Minister.
That is why the "let's ignore him" approach is insane.

Mike and Steve,
This blog is really the only forum for "free speech" in South Africa.
Perhaps I missed the "Kasrils/ Zim" editorial in the M&G?
Of course, SUPERNATURAL will be increasingly attacked in the months ahead. But that is a sign that your blog is being taken seriously.

This guy makes me sick, keep up the good work in exposing this disgusting man!

Anthony on that point check out the second last post on http://naeemjeenah.blogspot.com/. We all get a mention. I left a comment. Lets see if he publishes it.

Mike,
I read it.
Strange how Jeenah fails to address the silencing of Pogrund and Salem ??
Is the Jeenah blog immediate or does he edit and vet comments?
Posted by: THE DICTATOR / EMBITTERED CORRESPONDENT | December 06, 2006 at 15:37
He edits and vets. So now who is into censorship?
Posted by: mike | December 06, 2006 at 15:44
Mike,
Why do you think that Jeenah edits and vets?
Is it something that he was forced to learn at The FXI?
He can write freely on this blog. You wouldn't edit and vet his comments!
Posted by: THE DICTATOR / EMBITTERED CORRESPONDENT | December 06, 2006 at 16:25
I was wondering why your comment was not p on his site....but I put it down to a zionist conspiracy...could never be that this Bastion of free speech did not wish to post a comment....he would never do that!

Mr Jeehna has posted my comment. But did not respond :(
Posted by: mike | December 07, 2006 at 17:07
Mike,
Mazaltov re Jeenah posting your comment.
Unfortunately the man from The FXI refused to post mine. Perhaps my point that he vets comments (a lesson learnt at The FXi?) was too horrible to contemplate.
But any visitor to The Jeenah Blog will see that you are the only blogger posted. Clearly the very idea of debate scares Mr Jeenah.
Obviously, Ms Duncan has taught him well.

Mike,
I am now awaiting approval from Mr Jeenah with regard to my latest blog comment which I have just attempted to post on his
site.
I have argued that he neglected "The Pogrund / Waled" silencing in his editorial (instead he focussed on questioning my intelligence!)
In the past, such criticisms of my intellectual ability were usually
heard during chemistry lessons at school. For some reason or other, I could never get the hang of all those tricky dioxides.
