South Africa Backs Move to Condemn Israel
Last week South Africa played an important role in persuading the new and reformed UN Human Rights Council to convene a special session to condemn Israel for its action in Lebanon.
The shameful mockery of a Human Rights Council is to “consider and take action on the gross human rights violations by Israel in Lebanon.”
The request was filed by Tunisia on behalf of the 57-member Organisation of the Islamic Conference.
The council will also consider “the countrywide targeting of innocent civilians.” 16 members of the Council supported the petition – the minimum needed for the session to be called.
The non-Arab countries that signed the petition were the usual suspects – China, Cuba, Russia – and South Africa.
To those that claim the South African government has a balanced Middle East foreign policy - they supported a petition calling for a session to condemn Israel for, amongst other things, targeting innocent civilians. Yes that's right. Targeting.
