I am in London at the moment and by chance got caught up in the anti-War demonstration. I would like to share some insights that have been suspiciously absent in much of the mainstream media’s coverage of the event (including that of Haaretz).
Although the organisers have claimed that they were able to draw over 100,000 peace loving people to the march, in reality there were only a few thousand. In addition to the size, the composition of the crowd has also been distorted. It was not an outpouring of revulsion by ordinarily Londoners at Israel's brutality. It was in fact a motley collection of social misfits, hell bent on the destruction of Western civilisation.
There were the radical Leftists, waving their red flags branded with the ominous hammer and sickle. It’s ironic that this badge of anti-capitalism has become one of the most commercialised trademarks. Almost anything you can think of with a hammer and sickle was on sale. And rest assured that all of the profits went into the pockets of the selfless leaders of the International Workers Party to uplift the downtrodden proletariat of course. I was most interested in getting my hand on a copy of their monthly newsletter, the Proletarian (how original). It was on sale for 2 Pounds. I was damned if I was going to give 2 Pounds to these fat cats. So I explained that I was an impoverished South African tourist. The salesman looked at me funny and asked “so what?” I replied did Marx not say ‘to each according to his need.’ He consulted with his boss and then rather ashamedly agreed to give it to me for free.
There were also the Islamists. Their colour scheme was much more pluralistic than the commies. There were of course the women clad from head to toe in black (in a 35 degree heat wave, they were the true martyrs), there were the bright yellow banners of Hezbollah and the green standards branded with the crescent of Islam. Many carried posters with pictures of dead children entitled ‘we are all Hezbollah now’. Not “we are all Lebanese”, no that would be to diverse for it would mean they sympathise with Christians, Druze and moderate Moslems as well. I thought this was particularly apt.
I happened to come across an Islamist stall handing out pamphlets and DVD’s. They, unlike their communist brothers, were not charging. It is symptomatic of an ideology on the march awash with Petrodollars splashing out on friendship with potential converts as the Soviets had once done. When the Islamists start charging for their promotional material, then we know we’ve got them beat. The literature was tempting but I just couldn’t stomach watching a music video of Jihadi rapists. The one pamphlet that I found particularly interesting was entitled ‘there are no moderate Muslims’. (As this has been a regular discussion topic on IAS, I hope to do a whole post on it soon.)
But perhaps the most fascinating and repugnant participants in the march were 4 ‘chasidim’ from Neturei Carter. The looked like they has been hauled straight out of an Eastern European ghetto especially for the occasion. The one carried a poster that read ‘Zionist is a Corruption of Judaism’. It is interesting to note that this march took place on Shabbat and there was certainly no Eiruf. As I was queuing to confront them, a radical female Leftist, fast approaching her final reckoning with her maker, ran up and hugged one compassionately. In a very heart-rending voice she expressed her great sorrow for what has befallen the Jewish people. She proclaimed ‘60 years ago you were the oppressed and now you have become the oppressor, it’s heartbreaking.’ Yes, I thought, Jews in gas chambers are much more of a heart-warming sight than ones defending themselves with planes and tanks.
This freak show that was the London anti-war protest could have rivalled any circus. And yet none of the official journalists covering the event were able to see that it was an absolute joke. None saw the absurdity of ultra-orthodox Jew holding hands with a Feminist who was also holding hands with an Atheist who was holding hands with a homosexual who in-turn was holding hands with an Islamic fundamentalist chanting “Death to Israel” in unison. It was blatantly clear that these people (and many others like them around the world) are demanding an immediate ceasefire not because they are anti-war, but because they are pro-terror.
Brilliant post, Mike. You could soon be giving PJ O'Rourke a run for his money. I really loved the part about the communist newspaper. It brought back good memories of the one they used to sell at Wits (the name of which eludes me for now).

Thanks Barry.
I think the SA one is called the Worker’s Vanguard. I must confess that I have been browsing the Proletarian. It is far more balanced than its South African equivalent. The Leftist rhetorical is not as pervasive. They only use words like economic imperialism 5 times every paragraph.
It was also relatively worldly. The evils of Israel and America were not its only focus. There was a 3 page article on the communist victory in Nepal as well. I guess that’s the only positive news communism has had since the 70s.

Workers Vanguard are the lunatic fringe of the far Left - the Southern Baptists of the Communist movement, who seem to view Trotsky's writings as gospel. No one takes them seriously, and they have no base. Some people even think they are funded by the CIA to discredit the left, as it's a mystery that they still exist with so little support. Their writing is absolutely impenetrable.
And you spelled Naturei Karta wrong.

George W. Bush’s sentence-by-sentence speaking skills are deteriorating. Apparently, this may be due to a mental illness called “presenile dementia.” Bush may or may not be secretly still drinking heavily. Bush lied, and thousands of people died. Bush suffers from narcissism and megalomania. Moreover, Bush has been arrested three times. Bush was arrested for disorderly conduct. Bush was arrested for stealing. Bush was also arrested for a serious crime—driving under the influence of alcohol. There are reasons to believe that Bush suffers from a learning disability. Bush’s learning disability would explain a lot of things. All in all, Bush is a severely mentally ill individual. Bush is not fit to be the president of the United States.
Anti-war protesters are great.
