The Smoking Socks Award

The Smoking Socks award is presented to a letter writer in a South African paper whose funky smelling socks have induced him/her into a bout of prejudiced stupidity.

This week's award goes to a train wreck of a letter that appeared in this week's Sunday World: South Africa Should Help the Palestinians

USURPED by the machinations of the League of Nations, the military entity called Israel has become a political demon. And the world is sitting by while crimes against humanity are committed against Palestine. Hamas officials are arrested in order to paralyse the Palestinian government. This is done with impunity and probably applauded by the US, Britain and France. They all want a regime change. But even Fatah cannot visualise peace until Israel withdraws from the remainder of Palestine. Hamas is their best bet for peace, but a peace they do not want. The latest invasion is not about the capture or murder of an Israeli soldier. Any fool knows that a soldier risks his life. It is not about the super-sanctity of Israeli or Jewish blood either. If they valued the blood of their citizens, the Israeli government would get the hell out of Palestine and start acting like sane and sober neighbours. The Israelis cut a pathetic figure. [...] And while you are at it, bring in the psychologists and psychiatrists, the priests and the sangomas. You are dealing with demented people.

And so on and so forth…it's another example of the creeping normalisation of African anti-Semitism which ends with a misguided type of African nationalist plea.

God forgive me for my contempt for governments that sit back and forget the days when they themselves were under the whip of racist and colonialist powers.
