The Zapiro Obsession

Zapiro continues to show how you can be Jewish and still be cool at the same time!

I'd like to ask Zapiro just who he would like Israel to "give back the West Bank" to? It was not taken from the Palestinians, it was taken from Jordan.

If Israel decides to unilaterally withdraw from parts of the West Bank it is their prerogative. But it should not be expected of them. In response to Zapiro's cartoon mocking Israel's withdrawal from Gaza I wrote

It takes all the illogic that stems directly from blind hatred to think that Israel should relinquish all her assets before moving to the negotiating table. Israel cannot give up the West Bank without an end of conflict peace deal. When negotiations take place both sides will make compromises in order to extract concessions from the other side.

Here's another item of ZapTrash - a rerun of a 2001 cartoon which the Mail & Guardian printed last week.

You can't help but notice the irony of this. With Hamas looking strong contenders for the Palestinian election which will soon be held, the M&G choose to lampoon a vote for Sharon as a vote for war - in the face of mounting concern over Hamas' participation in the PA elections - illegal according to Oslo. Some highlightes of the Hamas charter:

"Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it." "The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. " "There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors."

What a disgrace. As if we have had a choice between war and peace...Saying that we choose war over peace is disgustingly racist.
