Alfei Menashe is an Israeli settlement in Shomron (Northern West Bank) 4km within the green line. On my recent trip to Israel we visited Alfei Menashe to get an idea of the strategic importance of this settlement.
In the photo below I am looking westward from the rolling hills of Alfei Menashe. It was a very misty day (and I have decreased the resolution of the image to make it smaller) but there in the distance you can see Tel Aviv. This is why Alfei Menashe is so strategically important - in the wrong hands it could provide a perfect position from which terrorists could fire on Tel Aviv and other regular Israeli cities.
The Israeli Supreme Court recently ruled in favour of a Palestinian petition to change the route of the fence surrounding Alfei Menashe because the original route placed 4 Palestinian villages on the Israeli side of the wall. The court actually issued an absolute order that the state must, within a reasonable period, reconsider the various alternatives for the separation fence route at Alfei Menashe.
