The South African involvement in the Iranian nuclear fiasco gets more interesting by the day.
Here's Peter Fabricius from the Cape Times: US seeks aid of SA over Iran`s nuclear aims.
THE United States wants South Africa to use its influence to persuade Iran to abandon its plans to enrich and convert uranium which have aroused Western fears that Iran is planning to construct nuclear bombs. Gregory Schulte, US ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said this yesterday on the eve of a vital meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna to decide whether Iran should be reported to the United Nations Security Council. The US, the European powers, and some other nations suspect Iran is developing the ability to enrich and convert uranium to make nuclear weapons. Iran insists it is doing so only to produce electricity. SA believes Iran has a right under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, although it has also urged Iran to take measures to reassure the world that it is not producing weapons. SA has been closely involved in the intensifying diplomacy to defuse the stand-off between the West and Iran. |
