Attention Seeker Always Gets the Last Word

After winning last week’s Smoking Socks Award our Minister of Intelligence Ronnie Kasrils has again had his say. In my Smoking Socks Award post I also included a letter by DA member Jack Bloom. Today in The Star Kasrils has hit back at Bloom with the sort of retort that you wouldn’t expect from someone holding the Intelligence portfolio.

Ronnie opens his letter with this gem

Disagreeing with a rabbi, agreeing with a sheik, makes me a vicious, Jewish anti-Semite, according to Mr Jack Bloom (Letters, October 7). His is the bigoted, intolerant, knee-jerk reaction that diminishes the term "anti-Semitic" into just another unreflective term of general abuse.

Kasrils distorts the affair by pretending that it is agreement in general with any Sheik that Bloom is so opposed to. But Bloom criticised Kasrils about his defence of a particular Sheik from Cape Town. Kasrils has attempted to paint Bloom as the bigot by deliberately manipulating what Bloom said.

It wasn’t any general Sheik that Kasrils defended. Again, let’s take a look at the sort of vile psychodrama fantasies that the Sheik in question, Ebrahim Gabriels, has spouted:

To prove their point, on Friday they released a recording of a sermon by the president of the Muslim Judicial Council, Sheikh Ebrahim Gabriels, which was broadcast live on Cape Town's second Muslim station - Voice of the Cape - just over a year ago and shortly after the second intifada began. In it Gabriels quotes a prophesy by the Prophet Mohammed that on the Day of Judgement Muslims shall kill Jews and be blessed. Gabriels also spoke of a Jewish conspiracy to control the wealth and governments of the world. "You will fight the Jews, you will fight the Zionists and the Jews with all their military power, will run away from the Muslims and hide behind the stones and the trees, and the trees will say: 'Behind me there is a Jew hiding. Kill him!'
