Two very similar Reuters stories, with two very different headlines.
Business Day: Militants call off attacks as Israeli missiles blitz Gaza
The headline provides a context for the Israeli missile strikes. They came in response to attacks from Palestinians who were firing rockets from Gaza into Israel. The headline even portrays the logic of the Israeli retaliation - it has scared the 'militants' who have decided to call off the attacks (at least temporarily).
The Citizen however report what is virtually the same Reuters story with a misleading headline: Israel missile attack tests shaky peace after pullout. (Sorry, no link).
This headline says that it is Israel who is the menace to the peace. It also asserts that there was some form of peace prior to the Israeli missile strikes.
This is crude manipulation. Should Israel be singled out for blame when their strikes were a response to 40 Qassam rockets that Hamas and Islamic Jihad fired from Gaza into Israel? The article does provide an explanation for Israel's missile strikes - which means the article contradicts the conclusion stated in the headline!
Israel cannot sit back and watch as the terror gangs fire rockets from Gaza into Israel. They are not testing the shaky peace. The rockets fired from Gaza are testing the peace. The kidnapping and killing of an Israeli man by Hamas is testing the peace.
