Israel and Ireland drew 1-1 in Tel Aviv on Saturday night in a crucial World Cup qualifier. Ireland led up until the final minutes of the game when substitute Abbas Suwan, an Arab Israeli from the Arab-Israeli town of Sakhnin, fired a 25 yard shot passed the Irish keeper to secure a point for the Israelis.
Some quotes after the game...
Suwan – “I thank everyone who cheered on the national team and made no distinction between Arabs and Jews.”
Suwan’s father, Abu Ahmed - “It’s worth more than a million dollars. The honor he brought to the town, the (Arab-Israeli) sector, and the entire country, is worth all the money in the world.”
