Palestinian terrorists set off a bomb 200 meters south of the Kalandia checkpoint at about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, killing two Palestinians and wounding 16 people, six of whom are Border Policemen. The terrorist had planned to blow himself up in Jerusalem, but due to the presence of security forces he fled and left the bomb in a bag, which h later detonated with a cell phone. He knew he would be killing Palestinians as he detonated the bomb, because Palestinians were waiting to get through the crossing.
“The Fatah Al-Aksa Martyrs' Brigades and the Tanzim, linked to Yasser Arafat, claimed responsibility in a statement to foreign media. Zakariya Zubeydi, 29, a leader of the Al-Aksa Brigades in Jenin, told The Associated Press that the original plan was to carry out an attack in Jerusalem, but that the man carrying the explosives was forced to abandon them near the Kalandia checkpoint as security forces closed in."We found ourselves forced to detonate it (the bomb) at the spot," Zubeydi said, adding that the group is sorry for the Palestinian casualties.”
Israel has thwarted 90 suicide bombings since January.
