Jewish Voices South Africa has just sent out the following grammar riddled e-mail. I have always wondered how a group that represents such a miniscule proportion of Jewish thought in SA can get away with a name that deceives the public into thinking that they represent the core South African Jewish perspective. Then I saw the child-like grammatical errors in their e-mail which went out to all of their members. And it all started to make sense...
POSTER DEMONSTRATION
TIME: 16H00 to 18H00
VENUE: Star Wall, Intersection of Jan Smuts and Empire RdAt a general meeting of Jewish Voices held on July the 13th it was decided to convene a public poster demonstration to support widespread international opposition to Israel's security wall. Our action is informed by (informed by?) deep concern for the long-term security of Israelis and Palestinians and for the fate of the State of Israel. Yes, that's why they neglect to mention any Israeli suffering, or the reason Israel constructed the barrier in the first place. That's why they hang out with Hamas supporting MRN folks.
That's why they always remind us of the amazing offer made to Arafat at Camp David and Taba.)The Wall erected irregularly along the Green Line, juts out at many sections deep into the West Bank, and has isolated and divided families and communities, cut off land from those who work it, and generally acted as an enormous dislocation of everyday life. For these reasons the recent International Court of Justice determination - that the present route followed by the Wall is illegal and one that has caused great suffering to tens of thousands of Palestinians - has highlighted the moral and political danger to Israel of this creation.
The recent announcement of plans to greatly expand several Jewish West Bank settlements - so as to finaliZe Israeli control over Jerusalem - is a further declaration to the Palestinian peace camp that Israel's credentials as a negotiating partner are false. The contestation over land, and the wish of the Palestinian to create their own state (in at least the West Bank and Gaza) are at the core of the conflict. Any Israeli actions which seek to minimiZe and shrink that Palestinian state will certainly, as the past decades have shown, perpetuate this war - particularly, the continued creation of `facts on the ground' (new settlements) shows a callous disregard for Israel's future. (Phew- that's a mouthful!) Such actions will undermine any chance for the historic compromises both societies must make in order to make peace.
It is likely that the United Nations General Assembly will soon be asked to vote on whether Israel should be excluded from the Assembly. Such a step will in all likelihood lead to sanctions. How shameful that a state established to provide refuge from oppression and discrimination, should itself violate the rule of law and become an agent for dispossession. Moreover, that the religious and nationalist organiZations in Israel have subverted the secular, more egalitarian ethos of the Zionist tradition. (Is that even a sentence? What exactly are they saying about religious Jews?)
The peace camp (across the borders, in both societies) must be strengthened to a degree that a new politics is able to develop there. Our South African experience has shown that a highly divided society can grapple with `intractable' problems and find, despite their inadequacies, more progressive solutions. In this regard we note that the Israeli High Court has also found a section of the Wall to be illegal. (They don't mention that the IDF has altered the route of the fence following the court's ruling. Perhaps because it shows that there is no need for any foreign interference.)
We need to support campaigns by the Israeli peace camp as well as those by Jewish people in other countries. We need to take our disquiet, our sadness and frustration, and show it very publicly so as to make known our sense of Jewish values and tradition -expressed by both the universalism of Isaac Deutscher's `Non-Jewish Jew' and an ethical Zionism.
It is for these reasons that we strongly urge you, and others you are in contact with, to participate in the poster demonstration. The recent members meeting expressed the view that Jewish Voices should try and play a significant role in debate as well as be an active agent in bringing change - this demonstration being
one such action. (The meeting expressed the view? Or did the members at the meeting express the view?)The demonstration is supported by many other Jewish organiZations, of which Jews for Justice for Palestinians in the UK, as well as the European Jews for a Just Peace have sent formal letters of support.
We have decided to work with the Palestinian Solidarity Committee in hosting this event. This was not a light decision. JVSA has been in discussions with the PSC for some now. (For some now? Alrighty then... ) We are convinced that even when our respective organiZations disagree on specific political issues, there are common values shared by the two organiZations. The PSC, like JVSA, is home to a plurality of voices. It too is deeply opposed to any forms of racism, including anti-Semitism. It too is committed to a democratic outcome in Israel/Palestine. We believe too, that it is only by actively engaging other organiZations that JVSA can help build a democratic public domain where tolerant and critical debate take place can on a host of issues, including Israel- Palestine, but also Arab nationalism, racism and religious fundamentalism. (Umm...Critical debate TAKE PLACE CAN what?)
The mind boggles....
It's important to remember that the only aspect of Judaism that these people identify with is Israel. Hatred of Israel.
