On Friday February 6 at 2PM the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the Palestine Solidarity Committee marked a new low in their campaign of hate by holding an illegal demonstration in the suburbs of South African Jewry. The march was not against Israel, it would have then been outside the Israel embassy. It was within the heart of Johannesburg Jewry, outside our communal institutions, synagogues, nursery schools and homes. The march was deemed illegal by the Johannesburg City Council, but that didn't stop it from going ahead. The message from one of the PSC spokespersons and former South African Minister of Intelligence, Ronnie Kasrils, was clear - Zionists are not wanted in South Africa. "It is reprehensible that we have Zionists here who support Israel" bellowed Kasrils. The message from COSATU was equally grim. "We want to convey a message to the Jews in SA that our 1.9-million workers who are affiliated to Cosatu are fully behind the people of Palestine," said Cosatu's Bongani Masuku."Any business owned by Israel supporters will be a target of workers in South Africa." The snares have officially moved from targetting Israel to targetting its supporters in South Africa, which is the overwhelming majority of South African Jews. At the last minute, Johannesburg Jewry turned up in their numbers in a show of solidarity. The action was meant to intimidate us but it had the opposite effect. Instead the Jewish community of South Africa, religious and secular, orthodox and reform, young and old stood together and united around their support not only of Israel, but of each other.
